The au
thor, F. Michler Bishop, is the director of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services and a Senior Staff Psychologist at the Albert Ellis Institute, where he worked with Dr. Ellis running groups and workshops.

I am recommending this book for a number of good reasons. For the most part, it's an easy read. Although the author is credentialed, the book is designed for those who need the help, rather than for the professionals doing the helping. I trust that most of you will find it to be easy to read and to understand.

The book is not intended to be read from cover to cover, although you could certainly do that if you wanted to. As the subtitle implies, it poses sixty-four questions related to addiction, offering answers and insight to each.

For example:
  1. Should I try again?
  2. How did I get here? How did this happen?
  3. Am I addicted?
  4. Do I have a brain disease?
  5. Who runs the "committee" upstairs?
  6. Can I moderate or do I have to stop completely?
  7. Is my identity at stake?
  8. Am I in denial?
  9. Do I have an "addictive personality?"
  10. Where should I start?

These are the first ten. The others talk about options, obstacles, key de-railers, things that may or may not be helpful for those who want to quit, and some long-term considerations.

The book also covers addictions to things other than drugs and alcohol, such as addiction to sex, porn, gambling, and even procrastination.

With each of these questions, the book is intended to provide practical and pertinent answers and resources relevant to many of the individual questions that might come up. Although there is much to be learned from it, it's not a textbook.

As said earlier, the book is clearly written for those who are looking for answers to the questions that are included here, but it can also be useful for those who work with people who have addictive and semi-addictive problems.

At this time, the book is $12.99 on Amazon. It's also available in Kindle format at the price of $9.99, but you might prefer the printed version. I will order a copy for the Pir2Peer library, as it would be perfect for browsing.
